Reinstate Unjustly Fired Transgender Park Ranger and Uphold First Amendment Rights
2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
I am writing to express my deep concern and disappointment regarding the recent termination of Shannon Joslin, a transgender National Park ranger at Yosemite National Park. This dismissal, which occurred after Joslin flew a transgender Pride flag on El Capitan, appears to be a clear violation of their First Amendment rights and a troubling instance of discrimination.
Joslin, a dedicated park ranger who has served in various crucial roles including wildland firefighter and rescue technician, raised the 55-by-35-foot flag during their free time, off-duty, and as a private citizen. The flag flew for only two hours before being removed. This action was part of an organized event in May with environmental activist Pattie Gonia, intended to promote inclusivity and remind us that "nature is for all people."
It's important to note that numerous protest flags have been displayed on El Capitan in the past without resulting in punitive actions against park employees. This inconsistency raises serious questions about the motivations behind Joslin's termination. Furthermore, the National Park Service's recent actions under the previous administration, such as removing information about trans activists from its websites and altering signage to erase historical context about racism and women's roles, suggest a concerning pattern of discrimination and erasure.
I urge you to take immediate action to address this injustice. Specifically, I request that you:
1. Call for an immediate investigation into the circumstances of Shannon Joslin's termination.
2. Demand that the National Park Service reinstate Joslin to their position if the investigation confirms that their firing was unjust or discriminatory.
3. Push for the implementation of clear guidelines that protect park employees' First Amendment rights and prevent discrimination based on gender identity or expression.
4. Advocate for the restoration of inclusive historical information on National Park Service websites and signage.
Our national parks should be bastions of diversity, inclusivity, and free expression. The unjust termination of a dedicated park ranger for a peaceful act of self-expression goes against these values and sets a dangerous precedent. By taking action on this issue, you can help ensure that our public lands truly remain spaces where all Americans feel welcome and represented.
I look forward to hearing about the steps you will take to address this urgent matter and protect the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals within our national park system.
