I am writing with deep concern about the pause in SNAP benefits starting November 1st as a result of the government shutdown. Food access is not a partisan issue - it is a fundamental matter of public health and community well-being.
When families cannot afford groceries, the consequences extend far beyond hunger. Children who experience food insecurity are more likely to develop chronic conditions such as asthma and anemia. Adults in food-insecure households face higher risks of diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Cutting off access to basic nutrition today will only create higher health care costs and worse outcomes tomorrow.
We cannot claim to care about the health of Americans while allowing millions to lose access to food. SNAP is one of the most effective programs we have for reducing hunger and supporting health in vulnerable communities.
I urge you to work with colleagues across the aisle to prioritize the restoration of SNAP funding and protect access to food for all Americans. This is about safeguarding public health, supporting families, and ensuring a stronger future for our country.
Thank you for your service and for taking this issue seriously.
