An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures (Calif. only)

End For-profit Utilities

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

Utilities should never be for-profit. Texas has demonstrated this quite clearly and our own fires and constant power outages are another example. Our access to internet is exploitative as well. Utilities should exist first and foremost to provide necessary infrastructure to people. No matter how many regulations and how much oversight is placed on a for-profit company it will always prioritize profit. That's why such companies exist. They end up being more expensive that way as well. We must put an end to for profit utilities. Electricity, water, gas, waste disposal, and internet need to exist to serve the community not line corporate profits. Nobody should be left with out water, electricity, heat, or communication just because they ceased to be profitable. How many people die in each power outage because their life saving machines fail? How many people fall Ill or die in the cold without heat? How many students struggle, how many people fail to access resources, how many can't find jobs without internet? How much more waste do we generate and fail to recycle with privatized waste management? The purpose of government is to provide infrastructure and necessities to people. We need it to stop outsourcing it's primary responsibilities to entities with profit rather than people as their goal.
