H.R. 3486 would sharply increase criminal penalties for illegal reentry and illegal entry – even authorizing life sentences for non-violent offenders. It's an unprecedented attack on our communities that would expand our already-troubling mass incarceration system, while making racial disparities worse. As your constituent, I'm calling on you to vote no on this dangerous bill.
This bill does nothing for public safety – but its passage would validate all of the anti-immigrant cruelty that the Trump administration has been committing since day one of the President’s second term.
Our communities need health care, housing, schools, and natural disaster assistance. We don’t need our government putting more money into hunting down immigrants and funneling people into private prisons. President Trump has already diverted critical federal resources to fuel his obsession with mass deportations. This bill goes even further, scapegoating immigrants, expanding mass detention and racial disparities, and investing in political theater, all while taking away resources from actual national security priorities.
We cannot afford to keep investing in these cruel and unnecessary imprisonment schemes. Please vote no on this bill and do everything in your power to keep it from passing.
