An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Re-evaluate $2 trillion nuclear weapon modernization plan

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The United States is planning to spend $2 trillion on new nuclear weapons like intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) over the next decades. This exorbitant spending is largely driven by the military-industrial complex and lobbying efforts of major defense contractors who stand to profit immensely, often at the expense of properly equipping and protecting soldiers. Modernizing ICBMs is extremely risky and increases the chances of an accidental nuclear war that could potentially devastate all of humanity. Former officials like Defense Secretary William Perry have warned that ICBMs are "some of the most dangerous weapons in the world" due to the pressures on leadership to make rash decisions during a nuclear threat. With the Doomsday Clock now at just 90 seconds to midnight, the closest since 1947, investing trillions into systems that raise nuclear risks is dangerously misguided. The majority of Americans actually support phasing out ICBMs according to recent polling. Military spending should be based on legitimate security needs, not corporate profits, corruption that harms soldiers, or pork-barrel politics. I urge you to thoroughly re-examine the necessity of this ICBM modernization plan based on its merits and risks alone, not the undue influence of the nuclear weapons lobby. The future of human civilization may depend on prudent decisions transcending narrow special interests on this paramount issue.
