I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to stand down the escalation of federal forces in Washington DC. The residents of DC have no voting representation in Congress, which means they cannot advocate for themselves during this crisis. As their ally, I am asking you to use your power to protect their community.
I specifically ask that you support the termination resolution introduced by Representative Jamie Raskin and Senator Chris Van Hollen. This resolution provides a clear path to end the current federal occupation. I also urge you to reject any bills that would extend the federal occupation period and to do everything within your authority to withdraw federal law enforcement agencies and the National Guard from DC.
The presence of armed soldiers in DC streets and masked agents detaining people represents an unprecedented federal overreach into a local community. DC residents are experiencing what amounts to an occupation of their city, with federal forces operating without accountability to the people whose neighborhoods they patrol. This situation demands immediate Congressional action to restore local control and protect civil liberties.
Beyond the immediate crisis, Congress has advanced 16 bills and more than 20 budget riders since August that would further undermine DC's local governance. These attacks on DC's autonomy are part of a coordinated effort to strip power from a community that already lacks voting representation. The current federal occupation makes these legislative attacks even more urgent to oppose.
DC residents deserve the same rights to local self-governance that residents of every state enjoy. They should not have to live under federal occupation or face constant Congressional interference in their local laws. I ask you to stand in solidarity with DC by supporting the Raskin-Van Hollen termination resolution, opposing bills that extend federal presence, and working actively to withdraw federal forces from the city.
