Opposition to H.R.1007 - The "Antisemitism Awareness Act"

I urge you to oppose H.R.1007, the "Antisemitism Awareness Act," due to its problematic interpretation and application of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. This bill significantly misrepresents the boundaries between legitimate political discourse and genuine antisemitism, with numerous civil rights organizations and scholars voicing concerns over its broad and indiscriminate scope.
Critics argue that the IHRA definition, as outlined in the bill, conflates legitimate criticism of Israeli government policies with antisemitic sentiment, threatening free speech and undermining the right to hold governments accountable. For example, a 2023 report pointed out that the definition is increasingly being leveraged to shield Israel from legitimate scrutiny and accountability, stifling meaningful dialogue on human rights issues.
It is essential that we maintain a balanced approach, ensuring that the fight against genuine antisemitism does not compromise the freedoms of speech and expression, nor obscure the distinction between prejudice and the right to critique political actions.
I respectfully ask that you reconsider your support for this bill in light of these concerns.
