An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Oppose H.R.1174 – Protect Students from For-Profit College Abuse

I’m writing as your constituent from Boonton, NJ to urge you to oppose H.R.1174, the “Ensuring Distance Education Act.” This bill is a blatant giveaway to for-profit colleges, and it would weaken essential safeguards in the Higher Education Act. H.R.1174 seeks to rewrite the 90/10 rule by allowing revenue from distance education programs to count as non-federal income—even when it comes directly from federal student aid. That’s not reform; it’s a loophole. It would let for-profit institutions continue to exploit students and taxpayers while dodging accountability. For-profit colleges have a long record of predatory practices, leaving students with worthless degrees and massive debt. The 90/10 rule is one of the few tools we have to ensure these institutions demonstrate market value. Diluting it, especially under the guise of promoting distance education, is dangerous and dishonest. Please stand with students and protect public funds. Oppose H.R.1174 and any effort to further deregulate for-profit education.
