I urge you to support the Restoring Food Security for American Families and Farmers Act of 2025, which would repeal the harmful SNAP cuts enacted through H.R. 1, the OBBB Act signed into law on July 4, 2025. These changes represent the largest rollback to SNAP in its 60-year history and threaten food security for 42 million Americans who depend on this program each month.
The fiscal burden on states and counties is severe. Beginning in Fiscal Year 2027, the federal share of administrative costs drops from 50% to just 25%, forcing states and counties to cover 75%. In states where counties administer SNAP, local officials warn these obligations are "beyond the capacity of the local tax base." These budget strains will inevitably lead to reduced customer service, increased bureaucratic barriers, and harder access to benefits for eligible families, veterans, and foster youth.
H.R. 1 also eliminated SNAP-Ed starting in Fiscal Year 2026, removing nutrition education programs that help families manage food budgets and prevent chronic health conditions. For households with disabled members, this loss is particularly acute as nutrition education helps manage conditions like diabetes. During the recent government shutdown hunger was used as a weapon, blocking emergency SNAP funding and causing the first ever lapse in program funding resulting in lines at food banks that were longer than has been seen in decades.
The Restoring Food Security for American Families and Farmers Act would reverse nearly $200 billion in eliminated funding and restore SNAP as a reliable safeguard against poverty. I ask you to cosponsor and vote for this critical legislation.
