An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures (Texas only)

Immigration Status of Texas Hospital Patients is Incredibly Concerning

4 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

This executive order requiring Texas public hospitals to collect immigration status data on patients and track costs for providing care to undocumented immigrants raises significant concerns. Mandating healthcare providers to inquire about immigration status could deter many from seeking essential medical treatment out of fear, putting their health and safety at risk. This order appears to be an attempt to shift responsibility for immigration enforcement onto healthcare facilities, overstepping the role of state government. Public hospitals have an ethical and legal duty to provide emergency care regardless of immigration status. Forcing them to gather such sensitive information undermines patient privacy and trust in the healthcare system. Rather than vilifying vulnerable populations, efforts should focus on ensuring access to affordable healthcare for all Texas residents. Immigration is a complex issue best addressed through comprehensive federal reform, not piecemeal state policies that compromise medical ethics and human rights. I urge you to reconsider this misguided executive action that could have dire public health consequences.
