I'm asking you to support the AI Data Center Moratorium Act introduced by Senator Sanders and Representative Ocasio-Cortez. This legislation would halt construction of new AI data centers until we establish real safeguards for safety, privacy, civil rights, and environmental protection.
Right now, nearly 3,000 data centers are under construction or planned across the country, with 4,000 already operating. These facilities consume staggering amounts of resources. Meta is building one in Louisiana the size of Manhattan that will use as much electricity as 1.6 million homes. Wholesale electricity costs have already jumped up to 267% in areas near data centers over the last five years. An Amazon data center in Oregon worsened water pollution linked to cancer and miscarriages.
We're letting a handful of tech billionaires reshape our economy and future without any democratic oversight. Companies like Palantir are mining data from our subway rides, social media, and smart devices, then weaponizing it with AI tools. Meanwhile, Congress hasn't seriously discussed what happens when automation eliminates jobs and people can't afford healthcare or rent.
This moratorium gives us time to catch up and ensure AI benefits workers and communities, not just wealthy executives. Vote yes on this bill.
