The proposed FY26 education budget raises concerns for veterans, agricultural workers, and students in both cities and rural America. Eliminating $8.5 billion in education programs—including supports for migrant students and low-income families—will hit rural school districts particularly hard.
The budget removes TRIO programs for veterans, cuts average Pell Grants by $1,400, and slashes federal work-study—directly harming veterans, first-generation students, and working parents trying to earn a degree.
Programs serving English learners, children with disabilities, and desegregation efforts are defunded.
At the same time, federal support for charter schools is increased without meaningful evidence of growth or demand.
A $5 billion federal voucher scheme threatens to shift public dollars without adequate safeguards.
America depends on fair access to public education—we must not leave them behind. I urge you to oppose this budget and ensure education policy reflects the needs of everyday Americans.
