This proposed legislation, HB2655, raises serious concerns about protecting the rights and well-being of LGBTQ+ students in public schools. Allowing school staff to misgender or deadname students who are transgender or non-binary, without any regard for the student's gender identity, can be extremely harmful and invalidating. Research shows that respecting a transgender or non-binary person's name and pronouns is vital for their mental health and safety. Additionally, mandating that schools inform parents about a student's gender identity, without the student's consent, is a violation of privacy and could lead to rejection or abuse from unaccepting families. Many LGBTQ+ youth already face heightened risks of homelessness, depression, and suicide when rejected by their families due to their identities. While religious freedoms are important, they should not come at the expense of discriminating against or harming vulnerable student populations. Displaying religious iconography that could make non-Christian students feel alienated or endorsing particular religious views raises concerns about maintaining environments welcoming to students of all faiths and backgrounds. This bill, HB2655, undermines the ability of schools to be inclusive, supportive spaces for LGBTQ+ youth. The potential consequences for student well-being and safety are severe. I urge you to reject this discriminatory legislation and instead focus on policies that protect all students equally, regardless of gender identity or religious beliefs.
