On January 6, 2021, the nation witnessed a violent assault on American democracy. A mob, incited by former President Trump's false claims of a "stolen election," stormed the Capitol to overturn legitimate election results. This attack on the peaceful transfer of power struck at the very foundation of our democracy. Section 3 of the 14th Amendment disqualifies anyone who has "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" from holding federal office. Legal scholars argue that Trump's actions—spreading lies about electoral fraud, summoning supporters to Washington, and fueling the violence—constitute insurrection against the Constitution he swore to uphold. To protect our democracy, Congress must enforce this constitutional safeguard and bar Donald Trump from ever holding federal office again. Failing to act would set a dangerous precedent, effectively condoning future assaults on the peaceful transfer of power.
