An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Vote no on empowering Big Tech. Vote no on KOSA.

I oppose the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA). While I agree that companies have acted badly and I'm glad you're trying to find a solution, I also don't want to put companies like Twitter, TikTok, and Meta in the position to be guardians of children (must "act in the best interest of" children). And I don't want to expect such companies to specifically identify anyone (verify age), least of all children. Giving tech companies more information and more responsibility will only empower them to continue to act badly. In addition, not all parents are capable of providing good guidance; the response to tech company overreach is not to universally promote helicopter parenting. In my opinion, it would be more effective to increase online privacy and online access to information, rather than decreasing online privacy and limiting what topics may be discussed online (most likely even when these topics are discussed in a healthy way). I would also like to see more anti-trust action so one company's interpretation of what is "best" doesn't control large portions of the internet. The solution to companies acting badly is always to give companies less power, not more.
