Create a U.S. Department of Community Safety and Repair

I am writing today to ask you to help organize and effect the monumental project of creating a U.S. Department of Community Safety and Repair. This project is Powerfully envisioned and articulated by Dr. Eric Reinhart, anthropologist, psychoanalyst, and physician, in a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMms2208239). Since I couldn’t hope to craft a better argument, I’ll use an excerpt from Dr. Reinhart’s own words to describe the project: “To undo the harms of mass incarceration and build shared safety for everyone will require not just abolishing oppressive police and prison systems but also building new infrastructures for economic, medical, and social repair. This is what reconstructive justice looks like.“ I hope you will dedicate some time to reading and reflecting on this well-crafted, reasonable vision for a more just world and invest your time and energy in advocating to realize the vision!
