As survivors of one of history’s darkest moments, the hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) have long warned the world about the horrors of unchecked violence and the consequences of war on civilian populations. In their acceptance speech, they drew an unflinching parallel between the level of destruction they witnessed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and what is unfolding today in Gaza. Homes, hospitals, schools, and entire neighborhoods are being reduced to rubble, much like post-war Japan. It is unconscionable that, despite the clear parallels with the past, we continue to allow such devastation to unfold. Their experiences show us that recovery from such horror takes generations, and the emotional and physical scars never fully heal.
