An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Democracy depends on Independent Free Press

Your silence on the administration’s blatant assault on the First Amendment is not just disappointing—it’s dangerous. While attacks on individuals are alarming, I’m focusing on the escalating, deliberate retaliation against the free press—meant to control the narrative and punish dissent. These actions are not just undemocratic—they're un-American. Oct 31, 2024 – Trump Sues CBS Over Harris Interview Trump sued CBS over a Kamala Harris interview, accusing them of rigging coverage. CBS settled. He still lies that it was never aired and was edited “to help Democrats.” Dec 2024 – Lawsuit Against Des Moines Register Trump sued the Register and its pollster for publishing a poll that showed him trailing. This is textbook abuse of government power to intimidate. Jan 2025 – Trump Calls MSNBC and CNN ‘Illegal’ At a DOJ event, Trump said MSNBC “shouldn’t have a right to broadcast” and called CNN and MSNBC “illegal operations.” That’s not conservative—it’s authoritarian. Feb 2025 – AP Banned for Refusing Preferred Wordage The AP was barred from the press pool for refusing to call the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” The White House even admits it was for a purely retaliatory reason. A federal judge ruled it unlawful. The White House is ignoring the ruling. March 2025 – Trump Discredits The Atlantic After The Atlantic broke the SignalGate story, Trump called them “traitorous garbage” and accused them—without evidence—of being part of a foreign psy-op. EVEN THOUGH THE WHITE HOUSE ADMITS THIS DISGUSTING INCIDENT DID HAPPENED. April 14, 2025 – Second CBS Attack Over Ukraine Story After 60 Minutes ran a piece critical of U.S. policy in Ukraine and Greenland, Trump demanded CBS lose its FCC license. No administration should have that power. The First Amendment doesn’t protect the press because it’s perfect—it protects the press because no government should decide what Americans are allowed to hear. That principle used to be sacred to conservatives. The First Amendment is not a suggestion—it’s the law. If you let this slide, you are complicit in the erosion of press freedom. The American people depend on an independent press to hold leaders accountable. It seems as though you might want to get your news from a larger variety of sources—ones that aren’t just parroting talking points—since you seem unaware of all of these attacks. If you cannot be bothered to take a stand on something as fundamental as the First Amendment, then maybe you should reconsider whether you’re fit to hold a job that requires defending the Constitution.
