Stop Tariffs and Threats of Annexation Against Greenland

Recent actions by the Trump regime, led by President Donald J. Trump, demand immediate congressional intervention to prevent further escalation and to reassert Congress’s constitutional authority. The Trump regime has announced plans to impose tariffs of 10% on imports from eight European nations, rising to 25% later this year, unless Denmark agrees to negotiate the transfer of Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of approximately 57,000 people. Denmark and the government of Greenland have both stated clearly that Greenland is not for sale. The targeted nations are among the United States’ closest allies and include multiple members of the European Union. These tariffs are not tied to any economic emergency. They are explicitly being used as political coercion to force sovereign nations to comply with the Trump regime’s demands. Tariffs are paid by American importers and passed on to American consumers, meaning this policy would raise prices in the United States while damaging relationships with allies. In parallel, rhetoric from the Trump regime has raised concerns about possible military action related to Greenland, despite the fact that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Any use of force against Greenland would place the United States in direct conflict with NATO partners and severely undermine the alliance that has been central to global security for decades. Congress has already begun to respond. Senator Ruben Gallego has announced his intent to introduce a War Powers Resolution prohibiting military action against Greenland without congressional authorization. He has also proposed an amendment to the Senate defense appropriations bill—legislation that must pass by January 31—to bar the use of taxpayer funds for military force against Greenland. Importantly, opposition to military action against Greenland is bipartisan. Republican leaders, including John Thune and Mike Johnson, have publicly expressed reservations or opposition to any such action. This indicates that Congress has the votes necessary to stop an unauthorized escalation—if it chooses to act. The Constitution grants Congress the authority to regulate trade, control appropriations, and decide when the nation goes to war. Allowing the Trump regime to use tariffs as instruments of coercion against allies, or to threaten annexation and military force without authorization, would represent a profound abdication of those responsibilities. We urge Congress to act immediately by: • Supporting the Gallego War Powers Resolution • Passing appropriations language prohibiting military action against Greenland • Blocking tariffs imposed for political coercion rather than economic necessity • Conducting oversight hearings on executive overreach in trade and foreign policy The American people do not support wars against NATO allies or economic self-harm used to pursue territorial ambitions. Congress must step in now—before further damage is done.
