An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress

Take control of ICE operations

2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

On January 24, 2026, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, Alex Pretti, was shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. Earlier in the month, the fatal shooting of Renée Good by a federal immigration agent during a related operation intensified local and national outrage. These shootings followed weeks of heightened federal enforcement activity in the Twin Cities that many local leaders and residents have described as excessive and dangerous. The events in Minnesota, and similar use-of-force incidents documented across the country, raise serious concerns about whether current immigration enforcement operations prioritize public safety, constitutional rights, and community trust. According to recent polling, a majority of Americans believe these actions reflect inappropriate use of force and worsened public safety outcomes in the communities affected. I urge you to consider the following actions: 1. Suspend ongoing and planned ICE and Border Patrol enforcement operations that rely on aggressive tactics with high risk of harm to civilians. 2. Initiate comprehensive congressional oversight hearings into current immigration enforcement policies, including the use of force standards, agent training, and accountability mechanisms. 3. Require mandatory body-worn cameras and transparent reporting for all ICE and Border Patrol personnel engaged in field operations. 4. Ensure independent, impartial investigations of all use-of-force incidents involving federal immigration agents, with findings reported publicly. 5. Reevaluate funding and legislative authority for ICE operations that lack clear safeguards for civil rights and public safety. These steps are essential to restore public trust, protect the lives and liberties of U.S. citizens and immigrants alike, and ensure that immigration enforcement serves the public interest rather than inflaming division or causing avoidable tragedy. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your leadership in promoting safe, just, and accountable federal law enforcement policies.
