Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen took it upon himself to go to El Salvador and demand proof of Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s life this week — and he got it. How? He didn’t walk away. He didn’t crumble at the first of several obstacles meant to deny him the right to act on behalf of his constituents. Even when a caravan of military personnel surrounded his car to deny him access to the prison. He persisted. He was elected to serve the interests of the American people, and he did.
Even though the administration has not reversed course to return Kilmar and the 237 other men who were forcibly imprisoned in El Salvador last month, Democratic Senator Van Hollen gave us reason to hope. Now I CALL ON YOU to do the same, so our faith can be restored that all of us can be safe from life-threatening whims that deny Constitutional protections.
I DEMAND YOU travel to El Salvador to conduct welfare checks on the people unlawfully abducted and disappeared under the Alien Enemies Act and pressure the fascist regime occupying the White House to accept everyone’s right to due process!
Kilmar had been afforded due process in 2019 when he was granted a Withholding of Removal. The U.S. government told him that he could stay here, and granted him work authorization. He built a life, married a U.S. citizen, and started a family.
On March 15, the protections afforded to him by the U.S. government no longer mattered when he was disappeared under the Alien Enemies Act and wrongfully sent to El Salvador along with 237 others, most of them unjustly.
Over the last month, in a cruel, sadistic power grab, the Trump regime has refused to comply with court orders, including one from the Supreme Court to “facilitate” Kilmar’s return.
Is this refusal to comply with court orders what you stand for???
The President of El Salvador visited the White House this week, where Bukele and Trump went so far as to discuss the possibility of sending “homegrown” U.S. citizens to Bukele’s prison.
History has taught us that any of us could be next — and this administration has already voiced its willingness to cross that line. More recent history has taught me that YOU would NEVER stand up for me like Senator Van Hollen is standing up for his constituent. I DEMAND that you fight for our imperiled fundamental American rights!
If you care about preserving the core tenet of what it means to be an American, then YOU MUST advocate for due process for the hundreds of men who were unlawfully abducted and disappeared to a prison camp in El Salvador — before it's too late. They are not an unknown mass. They have names. They have faces. They have families.
Conduct welfare checks on the people unlawfully abducted and disappeared under the Alien Enemies Act and pressure the fascist Trump regime to accept everyone’s right to due process!
We do not have the luxury of time, due to your cowardice leading up to this point. Reverse course NOW!
