Dear Senators:
My name is Judy Williams, and I am writing as part of the group #52lettersforGunReform, a group that includes committed voters from all over Louisiana.
As your constituent, I truly appreciate that one of you are part of the ten Republican Senators who is supporting the current bipartisan gun control bill. I am counting on you to continue to champion its passage without diluting it in any way.
My grandchildren have participated in far too many active shooter drills in their young lives. No one can learn in an atmosphere of fear; children, parents and grandparents should not have to worry about anything outside of their education in school.
While the bill as proposed does not include some of the key components I feel are necessary for comprehensive gun control, it’s a start.
Please consider including these additional items:
1. Universal background checks, including by unlicensed sellers (the Pew Research Center indicates that 93% of all gun-owning households support background checks for all gun buyers).
2. Requiring a license to buy a gun.
3. Limiting magazine capacity to fewer than 10 rounds in large-capacity detachable magazines.
4. Ban that prohibits anyone who has committed any crime from owning a gun.
The addition of these items could lower the odds of a mass shooting dramatically.
Thank you again for your support of the right thing to do. I will remember this at the ballot box.
We all will.
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration.
This letter will be co-signed by people from all over the state, so you may receive multiple letters, cementing how serious we are and how urgent the cause is.
