Protect Old-Growth Forests, Instead of Killing Barred Owls

The federal plan to kill hundreds of thousands of barred owls in the Pacific Northwest over three decades is alarming, especially given the risks of unintended consequences and questionable viability on such a massive scale. While efforts to aid the recovery of the threatened northern spotted owl are understandable, this lethal approach seems misguided and unsustainable. A more effective long-term solution would be protecting and restoring old-growth forest habitats critical for both owl species. Rather than resorting to killing owls, resources should instead focus on preserving and expanding these diminishing environments vital to the region's biodiversity and ecological balance. Lethal control provides no guarantee of success and could further imperil these already vulnerable owl populations. We urge exploring alternative conservation strategies that address the root cause - deforestation and habitat loss. Protecting our remaining old-growth forests is an investment in the future of these magnificent birds and the rich ecosystems they represent.
