An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives

Constituent Concerns re. HR 7 - Women’s Healthcare Access Restrictions

I am writing to express my serious concerns about House Resolution 7, "Recognizing the importance of access to comprehensive, high-quality, life-affirming medical care for women of all ages." While the resolution's stated goal of supporting women's healthcare access is laudable, several aspects of this legislation raise significant concerns about its actual impact on women's healthcare rights and access. First, I am troubled by the resolution's endorsement of a single private healthcare consortium (Pro Women's Healthcare Centers) as the standard-bearer for women's healthcare. Healthcare standards should be established by recognized medical authorities and professional organizations, not by private entities that may have specific ideological alignments. This could set a concerning precedent for healthcare policy. Second, while the resolution claims to support "comprehensive" care, it presents a notably limited scope of services. The absence of any mention of full-spectrum family planning services, including contraception, suggests this resolution may actually restrict rather than expand healthcare access. The emphasis on "life-affirming" care – a term typically associated with limiting reproductive choices – appears to prioritize ideology over medical best practices. Third, the integration of spiritual wellness into medical care standards raises serious concerns about the separation of church and state in healthcare delivery. While spiritual care may be important to individual patients, codifying it in a congressional resolution could compromise the secular nature of our healthcare system and potentially discriminate against those with different beliefs. Fourth, the resolution's emphasis on family and community involvement in women's healthcare decisions could potentially compromise patient privacy and autonomy. Women must have the right to make independent, confidential healthcare decisions without mandatory family involvement. I urge you to oppose this resolution and instead support legislation that: - Protects and expands access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare services - Relies on evidence-based medical standards established by recognized healthcare authorities - Maintains clear separation between religious beliefs and medical care - Preserves patient privacy and autonomy in healthcare decisions - Supports diverse healthcare delivery systems rather than endorsing specific private entities I would appreciate hearing your position on this resolution and what steps you plan to take to protect comprehensive women's healthcare access.
