An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Rep. Sarah McBride is owed an apology from Rep. Keith Self

28 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

Representative Keith Self's refusal to use the proper name and pronouns for Congresswoman Sarah McBride shows a serious lack of respect and basic decency, which is not suitable for someone in his role. By purposely misgendering Rep. McBride, who is the first openly transgender member of Congress, he has acted in an offensive and discriminatory manner. Instead of addressing his inappropriate behavior, he chose to end the hearing, which shows he isn’t taking his responsibilities as chairman seriously. This situation raises concerns about Rep. Self's ability to behave professionally and treat all members of Congress with the respect they deserve. His actions damage the credibility of the House Foreign Affairs committee he leads. Rep. Self should apologize to Rep. McBride and to the American public, and he needs to think about whether he can carry out his duties fairly and impartially moving forward. As your constituent, I urge you to support Rep. McBride and denounce Rep. Miller's comments. Please continue to promote diversity and inclusion, demonstrating true leadership by ensuring that everyone is treated with respect.
