According to these reports, people are so cold that they cannot speak with their loved ones without their teeth chattering. They are using towels and any materials available to try to keep warm. No one — regardless of immigration status — should be subjected to unsafe, inhumane conditions, especially when freezing temperatures pose a real risk to health and life. Detention facilities are responsible for providing basic necessities, including adequate heating. Failing to do so is not only a moral failure, but a potential violation of minimum standards of care and human rights.
