As a person living in your district, I urge you to oppose the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” H.R. 7521.
Limiting TikTok would harm the free speech and connections of millions of Americans, while not doing much at all to keep our data private. Instead, Congress needs to pass a solid data privacy law that restricts how companies can gather aand sell our personal information and share it with foreign enemies, data brokers, hackers, and even government agencies.
Earlier this year, the courts blocked a ban on TikTok in Montana. This unconstitutional law would have trampled on the rights of millions of people to speak freely and associate with others. It's worth noting that the US has called out other countries for banning (or trying to ban) specific social media platforms.
Instead of implementing blanket bans (like the Montana ban) that may be deemed unconstitutional, let's focus on passing laws that ensure the protection of Americans' data regardless of which platform they're using - whether it's TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, or any other platform making money by selling our personal information. Millions of people in the US rely on TikTok to connect with loved ones and customers, and H.R. 7521 could trample on their rights.
So I'm asking you to VOTE NO on H.R. 7521 - the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,”.
