H.R. 22, the SAVE (“Safeguard American Voter Eligibility”) Act is a voter suppression bill introduced by Republican Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) in the 119th Congress that would require all Americans to show either their passport or birth certificate in order to register to vote – no other IDs would be acceptable. Student IDs, Drivers Licenses, Military IDs, and more would no longer be valid proof to cast a vote in our democratic system. With roughly 150,000,000 Americans without a passport and many more without proper access to their birth certificate, this could be one of the most destructive voter suppression bills in modern history. 69 million women lack a birth certificate that matches their current legal name, creating additional barriers. Elderly Americans are the least likely to have a passport or immediate access to their birth certificate. In 7 states, less than one-third of citizens have a valid passport. I encourage you to oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act today.
