Investigate the Trump administration's systematic destruction of CISA's election security mission before the midterms arrive. Political appointees at the Department of Homeland Security secretly asked CISA to acquire and hack a voting machine, then directed the agency not to alert the manufacturer if flaws were found. A former official said the goal was to "keep it in their back pocket to invalidate any results they don't like." That is not a security operation. That is election interference.
The damage goes far beyond one request. The administration has laid off more than 1,000 CISA employees, shrinking the agency by roughly one-third, and the proposed 2027 budget would cut another $700 million. CISA was nonexistent, in the words of election security expert Ryan Macias, through mid-September 2026, the period when midterm preparations should have been completed. States are now paying out of pocket for sensor technology the federal government used to provide. Some state officials say they will no longer share threat intelligence with CISA after the administration declassified sensitive data states had provided in confidence.
Election officials across the country are heading into November without the federal support Congress mandated when it passed the CISA Act. An investigation is not optional at this point. The integrity of the 2026 midterms depends on accountability for what has already been done.
