Keep Masking Legal In NY

The push to ban masks in public is deeply concerning and poses risks to public health, free speech, and civil liberties. Masks serve important purposes beyond concealing identity, like preventing the spread of respiratory illnesses and protecting vulnerable individuals. A blanket ban would endanger the wellbeing of many New Yorkers. Moreover, peaceful protesters and activists should have the right to anonymity when exercising their free speech without fear of retaliation or surveillance from authorities. Restricting masks threatens this fundamental right and could lead to discriminatory enforcement against minority groups. While public safety is paramount, there are more tailored approaches to address criminal intent without curtailing civil liberties unnecessarily. Narrower restrictions targeting those engaged in harassment, menacing behavior, or violence would be more appropriate and effective. I urge you to reject any sweeping public mask ban and instead work to balance public safety with Constitutional freedoms like freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Protecting the rights of all New Yorkers should be the top priority.
