Stop Stochastic Terrorism: Hold Officials Accountable

The FBI reported 11,679 hate crime incidents in 2024 with 14,243 victims. Anti-Jewish hate crimes hit their highest level ever recorded. Political violence incidents increased 40% in the first half of 2025, with 96 deaths and 329 injuries. Mass-casualty attacks increased 187.5%.
The evidence is not ambiguous. A peer-reviewed study in the American Economic Journal found a 32% increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes linked to inflammatory rhetoric on social media after the 2016 campaign. The study was replicated by independent researchers in 2025. When elected officials use their platforms to spread misinformation, dehumanize communities, and frame fellow Americans as enemies, violence follows. This is documented. It is measurable. It is not acceptable behavior from leaders in a democracy.
Elected officials who spread racist, antisemitic, anti-LGBTQ, or xenophobic rhetoric must face consequences from their colleagues and their constituents. Anti-LGBTQ hate crimes have risen 54% since 2015. Anti-Jewish hate crimes hit their highest level ever in 2024. When leaders call transgender people predators, label immigrants as invaders, or describe entire communities as threats, violence against those communities increases. That is not opinion. It is documented in peer-reviewed research.
Censure members who use dehumanizing language about ethnic, religious, racial, or LGBTQ communities. Publicly condemn rhetoric that frames political opponents or vulnerable groups as existential threats. Do not normalize language that the research shows leads to real-world violence.
Fund hate crime enforcement at the federal and state level. The Matthew Shepard Act gives the DOJ authority to investigate bias-motivated violence, but staffing cuts and leadership changes have weakened the department's capacity to enforce it. Hate crimes are rising. Enforcement is shrinking. That must be reversed.
Regulate social media and AI companies. A UCL study found algorithms amplify extremist content 4x within five days. Falsehoods spread 70% faster than truth online. These algorithms are designed to maximize engagement and profit. The evidence shows they drive radicalization and real-world violence. Require algorithmic transparency. Require platforms to disclose how content is promoted and to whom. Hold companies accountable when their systems amplify hate that leads to documented harm.
