I write to you as a constituent strongly in favor of the Bottles and Breastfeeding Equipment Screening (BABES) Enhancement Act. This bipartisan initiative, spearheaded by Congresswoman Katie Porter alongside co-leaders Congresswoman Maria Salazar, Congressman Eric Swalwell, and with identical companion bills introduced in the Senate by Senators Tammy Duckworth, Mazie Hirono, and Steve Daines, represents a significant step forward in supporting nursing parents during travel.
Traveling with infants presents numerous challenges, not least of which is the need to transport breast milk, baby formula, and breastfeeding equipment. Current inconsistencies and obstacles at TSA checkpoints exacerbate these challenges, often leading to stressful and humiliating experiences for parents. The BABES Enhancement Act promises to address these issues by mandating the TSA to clarify and regularly update its guidance on the handling of these items, in consultation with leading maternal health groups.
This legislation not only aims to protect the health and dignity of traveling parents and their children but also highlights a commitment to public health and safety. By ensuring the hygienic handling of breast milk and related nutrition products, we can prevent contamination and support the well-being of our most vulnerable citizens.
Furthermore, the bill's directive for an independent audit of TSA compliance underscores a commitment to accountability and continuous improvement in our security procedures. This, coupled with the overwhelming support from notable organizations such as March of Dimes and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, illustrates the broad consensus on the importance of this issue.
I urge you to support the BABES Enhancement Act, thereby standing with countless parents across the nation who seek nothing more than to provide for their children's nutritional needs safely and without undue stress during travel.
Thank you for considering my views on this vital matter.
