An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Protect Human Rights: Oppose Redundant H.R.9218 Dictating Sex Distinctions

15 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

The proposed legislation in H.R.9218 attempts to rigidly define biological sex in binary terms, disregarding the intricate realities of human diversity. This approach undermines the rights and dignity of intersex individuals, including nearly 2% of the global population (approximately 130 million people) affected by DSDs (Differences in Sex Development). The 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection clause prohibits discrimination based on sex. Therefore, advocating for and attempting to pass legislation that rigidly defines male from female is redundant and wasteful of taxpayer dollars. No legislation related to crimes or rights should be affected by sex. Legislating narrow definitions that exclude intersex people from legal recognition is unconstitutional and perpetuates harm against this already marginalized group. I strongly urge you to reject this misguided legislation. Please do not pass H.R.9218.
