Presidential Immunity and Its Dangers

Today’s Supreme Court decision that gives Trump “partial” immunity for his election interference is frightening. It is not partial at all. Its implications are total. Justice Sotomayor said it best in her dissent: “[The President] Orders the Navy’s Seal Team 6 to assassinate a political rival? Immune. Organizes a military dissenting coup to hold onto power? Immune. Takes a bribe in exchange for a pardon? Immune. Immune, immune, immune. Let the President violate the law, let him exploit the trappings of his office for personal gain, let him use his official power for evil ends. Because if he knew that he may one day face liability for breaking the law, he might not be as bold and fearless as we would like him to be. That is the majority’s message today.” I need you to realize that the usual rhetoric will not cut it. Giving the President lifelong immunity for “official acts” (that may involve stopping political rivals or dissidents (such as myself), overturns everything that makes this a free nation. President Biden must make an immediate Oval Office address. Members of Congress must call for the impeachment of corrupt justices. We must have term limits on the court. We all must do everything we can to ensure that every Democrat makes the connection between Trump and his justices. We are seeing each brick of the foundation of our mighty nation fall. I don’t think I’m being hyperbolic about this. Yes, I’m frightened, but I’m not reacting with fear for myself. I fear an authoritarian regime that future generations might not be able to escape from.
