An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Oppose Border Wall Construction in Big Bend Parks

33 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

I urge you to oppose the border wall construction planned for Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park. Secretary Kristi Noem recently authorized this project, waiving 28 federal laws including the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. This circumvention of environmental protections sets a dangerous precedent for our public lands. Walls will not prevent border crossings by humans, but they will prevent wildlife from migrating and lead to the isolation and possible extinction of many iconic species. Big Bend is home to endangered peregrine falcons, black bears, and Montezuma quail that depend on cross-border movement for survival. The wall would devastate these populations and disrupt the delicate water systems vital for both wildlife and local communities along the Rio Grande. Remote technology offers a far more effective solution for border monitoring without destroying irreplaceable ecosystems. Modern surveillance systems can provide comprehensive coverage while preserving the landscape that draws visitors from across the nation. Secretary Noem cited 89,000 arrests over four years in an area stretching from Sierra Blanca to Sanderson, but physical barriers are not the only answer to security concerns. Tourism serves as the economic linchpin for West Texas communities. The wall would eliminate the iconic views along River Road 170 and destroy the natural beauty that brings visitors to the region, devastating small businesses and local livelihoods. This is one of the most incredible parcels of public land in Texas, and it should remain accessible to all Americans. Congress must uphold environmental laws and protect our federal lands. Securing our borders does not require sacrificing irreplaceable natural resources. I ask you to take immediate action to halt this project and advocate for sustainable border security solutions that preserve Big Bend for future generations without compromising America's safety.
