An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Use Your Power to Release All Detainees and Shut Down ICE

143 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!

You just proved congressional intervention works. When Sister Letty Ugboaja was arrested walking to Mass in her habit on June 29th, Rep. de la Cruz called Secretary Mullin directly and had her home by Monday. That power exists. You used it. Now use it for everyone. Thousands of people sit in ICE detention right now without a nun's habit or a viral social media post to draw a congressperson's attention. They are no less human. Their families are no less devastated. The only difference is that nobody with a direct line to DHS is making the call. That is a choice, and it is one you can change. Close ICE detention centers. Shut down ICE. The Sister Letty case didn't reveal a broken system that needs reform — it revealed a system that bends when the right people apply pressure. Apply that pressure universally. If you can free one person with a phone call, you can fight to free all of them through legislation. I expect you to do exactly that.
