An open letter to the U.S. Congress

SO MUCH FOR THE ‘MERITOCRACY’ CLAIM OF GOVERNANCE

Phrases we can do without…”This is the most transparent [insert federal agency here] in history.” “As the U.S. military degrades the terrorist Iranian regime’s ability to attack commercial vessels and disrupt the free flow of energy through the Strait of Hormuz, oil and gas prices will plummet back to pre-conflict levels,” [insert WH spokesperson & current date]. Meanwhile, back to the actual war in Iran. Yes it’s still a thing. That we’re not winning. But are escalating. Sources told the NYT that the continued strikes by Iran shows they still have plenty of missiles. And are becoming more skilled at getting around US air defense systems. But a lack of information from the Pentagon makes it difficult to know the reality. Pete Hegseth reported that in the week before this weekend’s American military deaths, three other Iranian strikes had injured military personnel and damaged several helicopters. The Pentagon did not disclose the strikes, the casualties, or the damage to we the people, citing the need to keep information about operations secure. We can’t handle the truth. The perfect cover for incompetence. Neither the WH nor the Pentagon has outlined a military strategy for going forward since Trump announced 10 days ago that the MOU he signed on June 17 extending a ceasefire, was over. But both sides have increased strikes. The Pentagon has not held a major briefing on the war since early May. The administration has not disclosed the extent of depletion of crucial and expensive weapons used for the war. Or how Iran has both retained and rebuilt its own missiles. CBS News reported that Hegseth’s claim that “almost 90%” of service members injured had sustained only minor injuries gives a misleading picture of the extent of those injuries. An Army spokesperson explained that the Army classifies a soldier as “seriously injured” or “very seriously injured” only if they are at risk of dying from their wounds within 72 hours. And the kicker, the administration did not, has not, and apparently will not, consult Congress about launching the war, as the Constitution requires. And is ignoring the 60-day time limit for the use of the US military to counter an “imminent threat” without getting congressional approval. (Best ‘no-shit’ comment from a past ambassador to the Middle-East …”People, generally, are concerned. I mean, Americans are dying. It's very serious. This is a real war.”) So far the only apparent solution offered by the Trump administration to end what he started in Iran is to throw more taxpayer money on the bonfire. “His patience has always been limited, but I think we're now seeing the consequences of that,” a WH source said. “A good indicator of where he intends to go is his massive defense budget request to Congress. He wants to ensure the United States has more than enough capability to sustain any future operations if necessary.” In other words, he can’t figure out what to do but more money generally takes care of his problems. And he’s bored. This year’s defense budget is about $1T. Including a $150B in one-time funding Congress approved last year. And now the Trump administration has requested $1.5T for 2027. That is obscene. Oh well. Just add it to our $39T national debt. Ramp up the printing presses at the Mint. “This is what a quagmire looks like,” said one person close to the WH. At last, some real transparency.
