An open letter to the U.S. Senate

Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)

85 so far! Help us get to 100 signers!

Although there may be ideological differences between us, we all have one thing in common: we have women in our lives whom we love and cherish. And, whether they be our mother, sister, or partner, they deserve to live a life free from domestic violence. For the past 25 years, the VAWA has worked to protect women in this country by supporting local and state agencies along with nonprofit organizations whose aim is to eradicate domestic violence. Following its original enactment in 1994, violence against women dropped by 53%. That’s no small achievement. Until all women are safe in their homes though, that decrease will never be enough. The VAWA requires reauthorization every five years. As you know, it was passed by the House a few weeks ago. I write to you in the hopes that party politics may be put aside in the interest of protecting millions of women all across the country. Vote to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. Your mother, sister, partner, and friends will thank you.
