Balance online safety and LGBTQ+ education access responsibly

SCREEN Act (SB3314) - Protecting Access to Age-Appropriate Educational Resources As digital rights advocates, we express concern over the SCREEN Act's (SB3314) potential to restrict access to educational and informative content on sexuality and gender identity. While protecting minors is crucial, broadly categorizing LGBTQ+ material as "harmful" could inadvertently censor vital resources. The vague criteria for determining "prurient interest" and lack of "literary, artistic, political, or scientific value" risks subjective interpretations that stigmatize normal human experiences. Moreover, age verification mechanisms raise privacy concerns if personal data is mishandled. We urge reconsideration of provisions that could unduly limit access to age-appropriate information on human sexuality and gender. Open dialogue is key to fostering understanding across communities. By striking a balance between safeguarding and empowering, we can create an internet that nurtures inclusive growth for all.
