Following reports of severe quality-of-life failures — including mold, broken sanitation facilities, water supply issues, and disrupted resupply — Sen. Richard Blumenthal sent a formal inquiry on August 12 to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao. When asked about these reports, leadership dismissed the situation as "completely misrepresented" without addressing specific findings. This is a systemic issue. The Lincoln's deployment follows the USS Gerald R. Ford's 326-day deployment — the longest for any carrier since Vietnam. Pushing two carriers back-to-back past their limits isn't a coincidence—it's a structural pattern. It demands a real legislative response, not administrative brush-offs. I urge you to take three concrete actions: 1. DEMAND FULL ACCOUNTING & TRANSPARENCY: Support congressional inquiries into deployment extensions and quality-of-life failures aboard the Lincoln, rejecting attempts to dismiss documented habitability and mental health concerns without a complete audit. 2. HOLD HEARINGS WITH DIRECT CREW TESTIMONY: Support Armed Services Committee hearings or field delegations that hear directly from service members and family representatives regarding conditions during extended deployments, ensuring robust whistleblower protections so personnel can speak out without fear of reprisal. 3. LEGISLATIVELY CAP UNBROKEN SEA DEPLOYMENTS: Use the upcoming National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to set enforceable limits on consecutive days at sea without port calls or rest cycles, preventing the overextension of carrier strike groups and protecting overall fleet readiness. Our service members deserve competent logistics, honest leadership, and basic human dignity.
