Withholding puberty blockers, hormones, and gender-affirming surgeries from minors who need them can have severe consequences for their mental health and overall development. Numerous major medical associations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association, have endorsed gender-affirming care as safe, effective, and medically necessary for transgender youth. Forcing intersex youth to undergo non-consensual "corrective" surgeries is a violation of bodily autonomy and can cause significant psychological harm. Criminalizing healthcare professionals who provide this vital care is unethical and will only drive these services underground, putting vulnerable young people at further risk.
