I am writing as one of your constituents to urge you to take action to remove Louis DeJoy from his position as Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service (USPS). The evidence shows that under Mr. DeJoy's leadership, the USPS has been failing to provide acceptable service to the American people while raising prices repeatedly.
Several highlights of major concerns with Mr. DeJoy's tenure:
- The USPS reported a staggering $2.1 billion net loss in just the first quarter of fiscal year 2024, more than double its loss from the prior year's first quarter. This follows years of mounting financial losses under Mr. DeJoy.
- Service quality has plummeted, with nearly every U.S. state currently below target levels for on-time mail delivery according to the USPS Office of Inspector General. Constituents across the country have experienced widespread delays, lost mail, and unreliable service.
- To compensate for these failures, the USPS has hiked prices multiple times in just the last six months alone, including an 8% increase for stamp prices that will bring the cost of a Forever stamp to $0.73. Continually raising prices while service craters is unacceptable.
- As a wealthy Republican donor with no prior USPS experience, Mr. DeJoy's highly controversial appointment by former President Trump has fueled accusations of political motivations overriding public service.
The postal service is a critical national institution enshrined in the Constitution. Mr. DeJoy's "disastrous leadership," to quote public interest groups, has actively undermined rather than upheld its mission of affordable, reliable mail service for all Americans.
I implore you to act decisively by supporting impeachment proceedings through the USPS Board of Governors to remove Mr. DeJoy from office. The postal service cannot endure sustained mismanagement that consistently produces billions in losses and abysmal service quality. We must have principled, motivated leadership truly committed to reviving this essential public service.
Thank you for your attention to this crucial issue impacting our community and all Americans who depend on accessible, affordable postal services. I look forward to your response.
