Today I take pen in hand to write in support of H.R. 1712 the Modern Emoluments and Malfeasance Enforcement Act, introduced earlier this year.
I wholeheartedly endorse this comprehensive measure, that aims to prevent the misuse of political authority for illicit self-enrichment through financial schemes like meme coins.
The unethical and exploitative actions of issuing meme coins and digital assets by elected officials like the Trumps are a blatant abuse of public office for personal financial gain.
I agree that It is crucial to put a stop to such corrupt practices that undermine public trust, enable insider trading, and open the door to foreign influence peddling.
As you know, the MEME Act seeks to prohibit federal officials, including the President, Vice President, Members of Congress, and senior Executive Branch officials, along with their spouses and dependent children, from issuing, sponsoring, or endorsing securities, futures, commodities, or digital assets.
The consequences of such schemes are far-reaching, resulting in substantial losses for retail investors while benefiting insiders and foreign actors. The $TRUMP coin fiasco, where early offshore investors reaped massive profits while leaving 800,000 retail investors with over $2 billion in losses, exemplifies the need for robust safeguards against corruption.
By prohibiting the issuance and promotion of financial assets by federal officials and imposing criminal and civil penalties for violations, the MEME Act seeks to restore public confidence and ensure that public offices are used for the common good, not personal gain.
This measure represents a crucial step towards making corruption criminal again and upholding the principle that our public offices belong to the people, not the officeholders. Speak publicly about the MEME Act, and thank you for your attention to this matter of importance to our country.
