An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Jackbooted Masked Thugs Snatching People off streets

I write to you today with deep alarm and grave concern about the direction our country is heading under current immigration enforcement policies. We were told these policies would target dangerous criminals. But reports overwhelmingly show that those being rounded up are not violent offenders—they are hardworking individuals: farm laborers, construction workers, barbers, seamstresses, cooks. Parents have been taken from their children at school events, and congregants have been removed from churches. This is not justice—it is terror. The claim that mass deportations are necessary for national security is deeply misleading. Economic experts warn that deporting 15 to 20 million people would devastate key sectors of our economy and harm our national interests. The human toll is immeasurable, and the economic impact would be disastrous. More disturbing is the apparent erosion of constitutional rights. Due process is a bedrock principle of our democracy—yet there are reports of individuals, including American citizens, being detained and even deported without proper legal procedures. In some cases, people have been sent to foreign prisons notorious for abuse and overcrowding. This is not just a policy failure—it is a moral crisis. What we are witnessing echoes the behavior of authoritarian regimes, where people are targeted not for what they’ve done but for who they are—especially people of color. This is not the America we strive to be. In the same vein, masked thugs in unmarked cars absconding with people off the street is something we’ve never seen in this country. That is more like some sort of authoritarian terroristic regime. Congress must act. You must uphold the Constitution and defend the rights of all people living in this country, regardless of status. We urge you to put an immediate end to mass roundups, ensure due process protections, and investigate reports of abuse and unlawful detention. This is a defining moment. Please do not allow fear, racism, or unchecked executive power to dictate who belongs in America.
