This decision to end the VA Servicing Purchase (VASP) program without a viable alternative in place is deeply concerning for the thousands of veterans facing potential foreclosure and homelessness. The program provided crucial relief to over 17,000 veterans unable to make mortgage payments due to pandemic-related hardships. Canceling VASP outright risks leaving these veterans with no path forward to stay in their homes. While congressional oversight of such programs is warranted, the Republican argument that VASP put taxpayer dollars at undue risk rings hollow given their eagerness to pursue tax cuts overwhelmingly benefiting the wealthy and corporations. Surely preserving a program keeping veterans from losing their homes should be an equal priority to tax breaks for the affluent. This decision must be reconsidered, or at the very least an equivalent partial claims program reinstated without delay. Our commitment to supporting those who served should mean ensuring they have a roof over their heads, not abruptly revoking their financial lifeline and leaving them in imminent danger of foreclosure and homelessness. Veterans have sacrificed for this nation - the least we can do is make sure they don't lose their homes because of partisan politics.
