Stop the American Battle Monuments Commission’s erasure of black history

I am writing to express my dismay over the recent removal of a display honoring Black American soldiers of World War II at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten. This site—one of the largest American military cemeteries in Europe—is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), and for months visitors have been unable to learn about these soldiers’ crucial contributions. Erasing this information sends an unfortunate message of disrespect toward the thousands of Black service members who served with distinction despite facing segregation and discrimination. Their history is an essential part of our nation’s military legacy, and its absence from a U.S.-run cemetery diminishes the recognition they deserve. I respectfully request that your office inquire with the ABMC regarding why this display was removed, when it will be restored, and what steps will be taken to ensure that the stories of Black World War II soldiers remain visible and accurately represented. Preserving inclusive historical interpretation at our overseas cemeteries is vital to honoring all who served.
