I am writing as a constituent to urge you to co-sponsor and support the Stop Wall Street Looting Act, recently reintroduced by Senator Elizabeth Warren and her congressional colleagues.
For years, predatory private equity practices have exploited local businesses, healthcare systems, and housing markets across our communities. Under the current regulatory framework, private equity firms face little consequence when their high-leverage investment strategies result in massive corporate bankruptcies, devastating job losses, and degraded public services.
The Stop Wall Street Looting Act introduces critical reforms to safeguard our economy:
• Joint and Several Liability: Holds private equity funds legally and financially accountable for the debts, court judgments, and pension obligations of the companies they control.
• Worker Protection: Prioritizes employee compensation, wages, and benefits during bankruptcy proceedings up to $20,000.
• Ending Tax Subsidies: Closes the carried interest loophole and eliminates tax breaks for excessive, risky leverage.
• Asset Extraction Protections: Restricts predatory schemes like drawing excessive dividends and charging predatory management fees within the first two years of acquisition.
• Enhanced Transparency: Mandates the comprehensive disclosure of fees, returns, and private credit market operations.
Our regulatory systems should protect workers, consumers, and local supply chains rather than prioritizing short-term Wall Street profits. I strongly encourage you to champion this essential legislation and stand up for working-class communities.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and dedicated service to our district. I look forward to learning about your stance on this critical bill.
