Medicare Cuts Betray Iowa’s Elders and Christ’s Teachings

I am writing to express my profound anger and heartbreak over your vote in favor of Medicare cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill. These cuts will devastate elderly Iowans—including my own mother, who currently lives in an assisted care facility dependent on Medicare-funded services.
If these cuts take effect, her care will be reduced, and the facility may even be forced to close. We would then face the impossible burden of moving her home and hiring costly third-party caregivers, which could exceed $25,000 per month. This is not just a financial strain; it is a moral failing.
As a Christian, I am deeply troubled by how these cuts violate the clear teachings of Jesus Christ. Scripture commands us to care for the vulnerable, especially the elderly and sick. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” By cutting Medicare, you are turning your back on “the least of these”—our elders who deserve honor and care.
Proverbs 19:17 reminds us, “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Conversely, neglecting those in need is a sin with grave consequences.
These Medicare cuts are not just policy decisions; they are a betrayal of Christian values and a cruel abandonment of those who have given so much to our society.
I urge you to reverse your support for these cuts and fight tirelessly to restore full Medicare funding. Stand with Iowa’s seniors and honor the sacred responsibility we all share to protect and care for our elders.
I await your response and your commitment to uphold these moral imperatives.
