Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you in the strongest possible terms to safeguard Social Security, and utterly reject Republican proposals to cut trillions from this bedrock social safety net program.
For decades, workers have faithfully contributed to the Social Security system through payroll deductions, upholding their end of the deal. However, Trump and Republican lawmakers are now contemplating reducing payments to current and future recipients, betraying the promise made to those who diligently paid into the system throughout their careers. Decreasing or eliminating these earned benefits would push countless retirees, disabled individuals, and surviving family members into poverty and homelessness.
For many, Social Security is their primary or sole source of income. It is unconscionable to deprive them of the safety net they have rightfully invested in, especially when the ultra-wealthy receive substantial tax breaks and Congress members enjoy generous pension plans.
I urge you to take action to safeguard Social Security for the millions who rely on it.
There have been numerous bills proposed to ensure the solvency of Social Security: Those must be supported.
