An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Congress Must Defend Our Constitutional Rights Against Executive Abuse

18 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

I am writing to demand that Congress fulfill its constitutional duty to defend civil liberties against systemic executive overreach. The Constitution protects the rights of all people under U.S. jurisdiction, not only citizens. Due process, free speech, freedom of assembly, equal protection, privacy, and the right to vote are foundational guarantees—not privileges contingent on status, race, religion, gender, or political viewpoint. Yet these protections are increasingly treated as conditional. Executive agencies and federally supported programs are being used to surveil, intimidate, detain, and silence individuals and communities—particularly immigrants, refugees, Muslims, Palestinians, political activists, and those critical of U.S. policy. Congress must act decisively to protect voting rights and block legislation that interferes with free and fair elections under the guise of security or fraud prevention. Measures such as the SAVE Act and Make Elections Great Again Act undermine democratic participation and invert the presumption of innocence that underpins constitutional governance. The use of immigration enforcement or national security as a pretext to suppress speech, assembly, or political organizing is unconstitutional. Congress has both the authority and responsibility to prohibit the executive branch from weaponizing federal power against dissent. Privacy protections have also been eroded through unchecked surveillance and data collection authorized by statutes Congress itself must revisit, amend, or repeal. Rights cannot exist in theory while being violated in practice. If Congress does not assert its authority, constitutional protections will continue to erode—regardless of which administration is in power.
